Field report – From offense to MPU preparation back to driving license

My offense that led to the MPU

When I opened the envelope from the driver's license office, I already knew it contained a request to Medical-Psychological Examination (MPU) I was informed of this during the criminal proceedings, and immediately after my drunk driving incident, I also researched online what would happen to me.

The results of my research were sobering. I had heard that a blood alcohol level of 1,6 or higher requires a MPU, but I didn't think that would affect me as a cyclist. I felt unfairly treated—after all, I had deliberately left the car at home that evening because I had planned to drink.

By the end of the evening, I had drunk more than I intended, and two passing police officers saw me trying to get home. I can't remember all the details, but the police report stated that I was driving erratically. After a breathalyzer test, I was taken to the station and had to give a blood sample: 1,79 per mille.

My decision for MPU preparation

So, after I knew that an MPU was coming my way and that the chances of avoiding this examination were slim, I started to familiarize myself with the requirements for a positive Alcohol MPU I read on the Internet that a good MPU consulting This would be very important. But what constitutes good advice? You can find more information on this topic on our blog under “MPU preparation – What characterizes good MPU preparation or MPU consultation?"Was it enough to read a book or do some research online? To be honest, I considered that, because the MPU (Medical-Psychological Assessment) is expensive enough as it is. On the other hand, I figured it could end up being even more expensive if I had to retake the MPU because my preparation was half-hearted. So I decided to do professional MPU preparation."

I chose the MPU Academy for several reasons: First, because the preparation takes place entirely online and the appointments could be adapted very flexibly to my schedule. Second, because the sessions are individual, one-on-one consultations rather than group sessions. It was also important to me that the consultants are trained traffic psychologists.

Start of my MPU preparation

The counseling process started very smoothly: I received detailed instructions and a link to the first meeting. I was a little nervous, since I'd never done anything like this before. My nervousness quickly subsided when I realized the counselor was very friendly and explained the process to me: We would be working with an online document, discussing my offense and its background. We would also talk about changes that would prevent me from reverting to old patterns of behavior. I also received tips on how to handle organizational matters.

My MPU preparation

So far so good. I only became skeptical when questions about my childhood were asked. "What does that have to do with my drunk driving?" I thought. The counselor also wanted to know exactly why I was drinking. I had simply been drinking at parties. For fun and because everyone else was doing it. I didn't drink every day, just on the weekends and only with friends. I noticed myself starting to justify myself. I thought: "A young guy who drank too much at a party on the weekend and lost control of his bike now has to reveal his innermost thoughts and talk about problems he doesn't even have!" I felt stigmatized. My counselor was very understanding of my concerns.

During the conversations, I became increasingly aware of the function alcohol had for me. As a child, I felt somehow different from my siblings and didn't always feel accepted. "Don't be so difficult," was something I heard very often. Looking back, I tried to be less difficult, but didn't know how. So I simply started to withdraw and show less of myself. This at least helped me avoid unpleasant comments. Even among friends, I was rather withdrawn and felt inhibited. I wasn't aware of it, but alcohol was a way for me to feel "normal" and to be more like the others: more talkative, more open, braver.

It wasn't easy for me to talk about these things and admit the connection between my past and my alcohol consumption. But I was gently introduced to various topics, and now I'm actually happy that I know more about myself and am learning to accept myself more as I am, instead of using alcohol to make myself into someone I thought would be more liked.

My positive MPU

At the end of the consultation, I not only felt well-prepared, but I also truly understood the role alcohol had played in my life. Furthermore, I developed concrete strategies for taking better care of myself in the future. For example, I no longer pretend to be someone I'm not and I see my strengths more clearly. My friendships have become deeper since I've opened up more and learned to handle criticism better. In addition, my drinking rules have helped me find a healthy way to consume alcohol. I must admit that I was very skeptical of psychology before my consultation. However, I'm fascinated by how much I've become aware of in such a short time.

The MPU simulation at the end of the individual consultations gave me additional confidence. I knew what an MPU interview would feel like, what questions I might be asked, and that I could answer them. Of course, I was still nervous on the day of the MPU, but the interview went smoothly and didn't feel like an exam. It was a conversation about myself, which I began with a dry mouth and sweaty hands, and which, after a while, almost became a bit of fun when I realized how easy it was for me to answer the questions. Overall, the day of the MPU was both very exciting and also stressful for me.

The interview itself only lasted about an hour, but including the doctor's visit, the reaction test, and the waiting time, I was there for a good four hours. However, the assessor was able to tell me immediately after our interview that the interview had gone well, and I was enormously relieved when I went home. The time spent preparing for the MPU was very insightful and enriching. At the time, I decided to MPU Consulting Premium decided. Looking back, it was a good decision. Without preparation, I definitely wouldn't have made it. I was so happy when I held the positive result in my hands about two weeks after my MPU and knew I had made it.

I also wish you much success with your upcoming MPU.
