Alcohol abuse refers to the consumption of alcohol in quantities or frequencies that can lead to health, social, or psychological problems. Unlike alcoholism, which involves physical dependence, alcohol abuse is not yet a disease. However, it can be a precursor to alcoholism and should therefore be taken seriously. Symptoms of alcohol abuse can include increased consumption despite negative consequences, neglect of obligations, or relationship problems.
