Drinking rules are behavioral guidelines designed to control alcohol consumption in order to make drinking alcohol safer and healthier. Drinking rules can help reduce the risk of Alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence and undesirable behavior that may be associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Drinking rules can range from individual behaviors to social norms. An example of an individual drinking rule might be limiting yourself to a certain number of drinks in a night out or not drinking alcohol if you have to drive. Social drinking rules might include not drinking if you're under 18 or not drinking alcoholic beverages at certain events or in public.

In connection with the Medical-psychological examination (MPU), drinking rules can be an important factor in assessing whether a person is capable of handling alcohol responsibly and does not pose a danger to themselves or other road users. A person who has been convicted of alcohol abuse in the past may be required to adhere to certain drinking rules during an MPU and demonstrate that they are capable of consuming alcohol in a controlled and responsible manner. Further information can also be found at controlled drinking.
