A urine sample is a common method for determining drug or alcohol consumption. A urine sample is taken from the subject's urine and tested for certain substances in a laboratory. The test may involve a one-time or regular submission of urine samples as part of an abstinence control program. An abstinence control program as part of a MPU must the CTU criteria fulfill.

It's important to note that the detection of substances in urine does not necessarily mean that the person was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the test. The test can also produce positive results if the person consumed the substance several days or weeks previously.
