MPU reaction test – What is it and how do I prepare for it?

Well prepared for the MPU reaction test after driving license revocation

Certain life circumstances can lead to a person's expensive driver's license being temporarily revoked by the driving licensing authority or a court, and can only be reinstated under certain conditions. Reasons for this can include alcohol violations, drug use, criminal offenses, or traffic violations, which can result not only in a fine but also in points being added to the Flensburg driving record and a driving ban of at least six months. Reclaiming your license usually requires a change of heart and a medical-psychological assessment, which also includes a reaction test. To ensure that this challenge is perceived as a completely doable challenge rather than a nightmare, the following information is intended to inform those affected and prepare them as best as possible for their endeavor.

What is an MPU?

After a personal error that led to the revocation of a driver's license, those affected must submit an application for reinstatement to the driver's license authority. The authority will then examine whether all relevant requirements for reinstatement are met; otherwise, an appointment for a medical-psychological assessment may be necessary. This assessment is a three-part process: a medical examination, a computer-based performance test, and a psychological interview. The latter takes approximately one hour, during which the content of the interview is recorded in writing by the assessor. Audio and video recordings are now also possible upon request, but in most cases, these must be paid for by the individual.

The psychological examination

The interview with the responsible expert and a questionnaire form the psychological portion of the examination. During an approximately one-hour interview, which can be recorded on audio and video upon request, questions and answers are discussed together and recorded in writing. The examination is not an interrogation and should be experienced as relaxed as possible.

The medical examination

It includes general health assessments and, in particular, laboratory tests intended to provide the necessary proof of abstinence or controlled alcohol consumption. It should, of course, be assumed that those affected have clarified and eliminated the triggering factors for the loss of their driver's license by the time the MPU is conducted. In addition to the aforementioned examinations, the reaction test is also part of the medical part of the procedure.

What is an MPU reaction test?

The mandatory reaction test for the medical examination, which is administered on a computer, assesses reaction time in traffic situations and is similar to the test that taxi drivers and professional drivers of a certain age must take periodically. The test primarily examines the appropriate processing of auditory and visual signals and the corresponding reactions. Tests taken by individuals who lost their driver's license due to an alcohol or drug offense are generally different from those who had to surrender their license due to accumulating penalty points.

The procedure of an MPU reaction test

The reaction test is still administered to all participants while sitting in front of a screen using a corresponding computer program. Various buttons and keys of different colors and shapes, as well as two pedals placed under the table, must be operated during the test. A step-by-step introduction to the technology and procedures is provided, and these can be practiced until they are understood. Questions are welcome and answered naturally. So, don't be shy! Once all uncertainties on the part of the test subject have been resolved, the actual test begins. No special skills are required to meet the required requirements, and a stress-free approach is generally advantageous.

Preparing for the MPU reaction test

Anyone undergoing a Medical-Psychological Assessment (MPU) wants to be sure everything goes well on the first attempt. Is their physical fitness adequate? What is their mental health like? And, of course, crucially: Has the underlying problem (alcohol, drugs, etc.) been resolved? If an unfavorable test result is followed by a negative assessment in the subsequent, costly driving behavior observation, it would lead to a further revocation of their driver's license. The MPU would have to be repeated, which would be time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, well-structured preparation can be worthwhile, clearly explaining the challenges of an MPU reaction test and highlighting specific points to consider.

The MPU Academy has experts such as traffic psychologists and former MPU examiners who guide their clients step by step through the most important stages of preparation. They provide well-structured online guidance through the necessary processes and are available until the upcoming test has been passed. Good luck!
