New catalogue of fines – It will be expensive

It came into force on November 9, 2021. The long-discussed catalog of fines introduces some significant changes for all road users. Simply saying "everything will get more expensive" doesn't do it justice. The main goal the legislature is pursuing with these adjustments is the protection of pedestrians and cyclists in road traffic. And this goal should be dear to all of us, since we all travel on German roads at least partly as pedestrians.

Speeding violations, in particular, will become significantly more expensive in the future. These violations will now be subject to hefty fines. On average, the fines due will be twice as expensive as before, both in and outside of built-up areas. What should drivers prepare for in the future?

New and stricter rules should have been in place long ago. However, a technical error crept in and meant that the stricter fine regulations in the road traffic regulations had to be repealed last year. This was then used to make a few further adjustments.

Previously, the government had decided to punish speeding with stricter driving bans. Now, however, the government has changed its mind and significantly increased the fines instead.

At least 20 euros for speeding

Anyone caught speeding up to 10 km/h outside of town will now face a fine of €20. Previously, they got away with half that. For the same offense in town, the fine will increase from €15 to €30.

Despite the significant increase in fines, the regulations regarding points and driving bans have remained unchanged. A driving ban only applies if you exceed the speed limit by more than 31 km/h in built-up areas and more than 41 km/h outside of built-up areas. Anyone caught doing so must surrender their license for one month. If you exceed the speed limit by more than 51 km/h or 61 km/h, the driving ban increases to two months. Anyone who exceeds the speed limit by more than 61 km/h in built-up areas or more than 70 km/h outside built-up areas must accept a three-month driving ban and a fine of €700.

Parking violations will also be punished more severely

As a driver, you can commit traffic offenses not only while driving. Parking violations are a frequent occurrence, and these violations will be punished with higher fines in the future.

Up to 110 euros can be imposed for illegally parking on sidewalks or bike paths. The protection of vulnerable road users is clearly the top priority here. A fine of the same amount is due for parking in a safety lane or double-parking. If the violation endangers another road user, a point will also be added to your Flensburg driving record. It's also expensive if you block a fire department access road or obstruct emergency vehicles. The fine for these offenses, which in the worst case can cost lives, can rise to 100 euros.

Keep your eyes open when choosing a parking space

Illegal parking in disabled parking spaces has always been a major nuisance. Police and public order authorities usually intervene quickly. For the illegal parker, this will mean a fine of €55 in the future. The same amount will be charged if you mistakenly park your car in designated parking spaces for electric vehicles or car-sharing vehicles. Given the efforts toward more climate-friendly mobility, these fines against reckless drivers are welcome.

Car posers are also perceived by most people as reckless road users. To sanction their behavior, the new fine catalog includes a penalty of up to 100 euros. This is imposed if the driving style causes disproportionate pollution through noise or exhaust fumes. This is particularly the case if the driver unnecessarily reverses and reverses the lane to display themselves and their vehicle.

The safety of all road users comes first

Previously, drivers were only penalized for failing to properly form an emergency lane in a traffic jam. Since November 9, 2021, illegal use of the emergency lane has also been punishable, with a fine of between €200 and €320.

Because trucks repeatedly cause serious accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists, truck drivers are now required to drive at walking pace when turning right in built-up areas. Anyone who fails to comply will now be fined €70 and receive a penalty point on their Flensburg driving record.
